If you’re looking for one of the most scenic and easy walks in the Dolomites, the route from Passo San Pellegrino to Rifugio Fuciade is a really good option. It’s perfect for families, casual hikers, or anyone who wants to experience beauty alpine views without facing a difficult trail. We did this hike around lunch time in combination with another walk in Val Venegia in the morning, and Lago di Carezza in the afternoon, for a complete day.

This walk from Passo San Pellegrino to Rifugio Fuciade, located in the Trentino region, combines epic mountain landscape with the charm of a traditional mountain hut experience. We would recommend it in case you want a short easy hike / walk, with good views and really good food.

The Trail: Easy and Beautiful

The walk starts at Passo San Pellegrino, a mountain pass at near 2,000 meters above sea level, easily accessible by car from Moena or Falcade. From the parking area near Hotel Miralago, a wide gravel path begins its gentle ascent towards Rifugio Fuciade. The trail is well-marked and suitable for all ages – it’s even stroller-friendly for part of the way. The walk takes about 1 hour each way, depending on your pace and how often you stop to take photos (which you definitely will). The path meanders through lush alpine meadows surrounded by typical Dolomite peaks, including the Cima Uomo and the Costabella range. In summer, the fields are full of wildflowers, and you’ll often spot cows grazing peacefully. “What does the cow say, Lara?” – “mmmmhh!!”

A shorter version to get there

In case you’re tired, the weather is bad or your time is limited and still you want to make it to Rifugio Fuciade, we have another shorter walk option. And this is the one we did.

Instead of starting from San Pellegrino, park at Parcheggio Rifugio Fuciade. From here there is less than 2km walking, that can be done in less than 30 minutes. This option brings you to the same destination with minimal effort, and similar view, cows included!

Rifugio Fuciade: A Mountain Retreat

Once you reach Rifugio Fuciade, you’ll understand why this place is so special. Nestled in a natural amphitheater that looks like a perfect postal card. The wooden chalet blends perfectly with its surroundings, offering a warm and welcoming atmosphere. It feels… homie.

But the real highlight here is the food. Rifugio Fuciade is known throughout the Dolomites for its delicious local cuisine – refined yet traditional. Expect homemade pasta, polenta with cheese or wild mushrooms, and mouthwatering desserts. If possible, book a table in advance, especially in high season, as it’s a popular lunch stop for both hikers and locals.

When to Go

The best time to visit Rifugio Fuciade is from June to early October, when the snow has melted and the meadows are in full bloom. We went at the end of July and the grass was green and full of flowers. The rifugio usually opens daily during this period.

In winter, this same route transforms into a snowshoe or cross-country skiing trail, offering one of the most beautiful winter walks in the Dolomites. The rifugio stays open in winter as well, serving hot mountain dishes by the fireplace – a completely different but equally enchanting experience. If we come back someday in Winter, maybe we try this =)

Tips for Your Visit to Rifugio Fuciade

  • You can start early to enjoy the calm morning light and fewer people. But it’s not a packed walk like Tre Cime.
  • Bring cash, as not all mountain huts accept cards. This one does, but you never know…
  • Wear comfortable shoes, even though the trail is easy.
  • Don’t forget your camera – the views around Rifugio Fuciade are some of the best in the Dolomites.
  • If you’re visiting in high season, reserve a table or room in advance. The tables inside requiere reservation, the ones outside don’t.
  • And the most important: Check the kitchen hours! We went there around 2:30 pm and kitchen was closed. We wanted to try some pasta but they only had sandwiches and desserts.
