Lago di Braies Honest Review: Is It Worth Visiting?
When you search for the Dolomites in northern Italy, one image appears over and over again: a turquoise lake framed by dramatic mountains and wooden boats floating peacefully on the surface. That picture-perfect spot is Lago di Braies, also known as Pragser Wildsee, and it has become one of the most famous lakes in Europe, and in Instagram.
It was in our top 5 places to visit in the Dolomites, in addition to Tre Cime di Lavaredo, or Seceda. And being honest, all the photos we had seen about lake were incredible. But here’s the honest truth: if you expect a tranquil alpine escape, you’re likely to be disappointed. At least, in high season. Keep reading to learn our opinion.

First Impressions of Lago di Braies
There’s no denying that Lago di Braies is beautiful. The lake’s emerald waters look great in photos and the surrounding peaks create a dramatic postal background. It is, without question, photogenic. It’s reachable easily by car, and the parking fees are affordable. However, the reality of being there is very different from the dreamy Instagram shots.
By the time you arrive at the parking (there are four…), you’ll already see busloads of tourists unloading, and the path to the lake feels more like entering an amusement park than a serene mountain destination.

The Overtourism Problem
In recent years, Lago di Braies has become a victim of its own fame. Social media and travel magazines have placed it at the top of every Dolomites bucket list. The result? Overcrowding at levels that make it hard to enjoy. This happens in many places worldwide, we know, but sometimes, it’s simply too much and evident, that makes the place lose the “nature” vibe.
- Parking lots fill up early, and traffic jams are common on the road leading in.
- The famous wooden boats that look so romantic in photos come with long lines and inflated prices.
- Walking around the lake means shuffling along in a slow-moving line of people. I’m not saying this happens always, but when we were there, in a midweek of August, it was terrible.
Instead of a calming alpine lake, the atmosphere feels more like a theme park designed for photo opportunities.

Has Lago di Braies Lost Its Charm?
It depends… The natural beauty is still there — the water is still an incredible color — but the experience is so affected by crowds that much of the magic is gone. The sense of discovery that makes mountain lakes special simply doesn’t exist here anymore. At least, this is what we felt in our visit and heard from other people we know.
Even if you manage to arrive at sunrise or in the off-season, you’ll likely find tripods already set up, and the vibe of the a calm alpine lake doesn’t exist. For many travelers, that takes away the very thing they came for.

Is Lago di Braies Still Worth Visiting?
That depends on what you’re looking for. If you want a genuine connection with the Dolomites — quiet trails, hidden alpine lakes, and unspoiled scenery — there are better alternatives. Lesser-known lakes like Lago di Dobbiaco, Lago di Anterselva, or even small mountain tarns you’ll find on hikes can offer the beauty without the chaos.

However, if you know what to expect but you don’t care and want to see the lake for yourself because it’s so iconic, then yes, it can be worth the stop. Just manage your expectations: you’re unlikely to have a peaceful experience, and it may feel more like ticking off a postcard view than immersing yourself in nature.

Tips If You Do Go
- Arrive very early or very late to avoid the worst of the crowds. Sunrise is the best chance for some quiet moments.
- Skip the boat rental unless it’s really important to you. It’s expensive, crowded, and doesn’t add much to the experience in addition to some photos rowing.
- Consider visiting in shoulder season (spring or late autumn), though be prepared for unpredictable weather.

Final Thoughts
Lago di Braies is breathtaking in photos, and still beautiful in person — but its overwhelming popularity has stripped away much of the charm that made it special. If you dream of pristine alpine tranquility, you may walk away disappointed. If you simply want to see one of the Dolomites’ most iconic spots, then go, but keep your expectations realistic.
For us, it felt less like an alpine lake and more like a tourist attraction. Sometimes the most famous places aren’t the most rewarding ones to visit. We could recommend a visit to Lago di Carezza, that, despite being also famous and touristic, gave us a nicer vibe. Since you don’t have high expectations for this lake, you can still be impressed by its views.

Would be recommend visiting Lago di Braies in your trip to the Dolomites? Only if you have time and know what to expect. Otherwise, skip it and spend time in better options.
