Welcome to another post of the epic Dolomites. This time we want to talk about (for us) one of the nicest lakes we’ve seen worldwide: Lago di Carezza. Nestled in the heart of the Dolomites in northern Italy, Lago di Carezza—also known by its German name Karersee—is one of the most enchanting alpine lakes in Europe.

With its emerald waters reflecting the peaks of the Latemar mountain group, this “Rainbow Lake” captivates hikers, photographers, and travelers seeking natural beauty (and the typical Instagram photos too). In this complete guide, you’ll find everything you need to plan your visit to Lago di Carezza in the Dolomites, including how to get there, the best time to visit, hiking options, and local legends.

Why Visit Lago di Carezza?

Lago di Carezza is more or less a small lake —only about 300 meters long—but it’s really charming. Surrounded by dense pine forests and the towering Latemar peaks, it offers some of the best reflections in the Dolomites. The waters have an intense turquoise/emerald color, that shifts depending on the sunlight and the season. Hikers enjoy the calm circular path around the lake, while nature lovers are drawn by its tranquility. Unlike larger lakes that can feel extremely busy or commercialized (Lago di Braies, ehem, ehem) Lago di Carezza preserves a more serene alpine atmosphere. Yet it is still a famous place in the Dolomites.

How to Get to Lago di Carezza

Located roughly 25 kilometers from Bolzano in South Tyrol, Lago di Carezza in the Dolomites is easily accessible by car or public transport.

  • 🚘 By car: Take the SS241, also called the Great Dolomites Road. A parking lot sits directly across from the lake, and a pedestrian tunnel leads safely to the lakeshore. The parking is (in Summer 2025 it was 3€/hour). The tunnel has toilets inside and you can pay the parking with card. The parking is also big enough and there is no rush to go early in the morning or to book online, like the parking Auronzo in Tre Cime di Lavaredo.
  • 🚌 By bus: Regular buses run from Bolzano to Lago di Carezza during the peak tourist season, making it accessible even without a car.

For those planning a full day trip, it’s easy to combine a visit to Lago di Carezza with stops at nearby towns like Nova Levante or hiking routes in Val d’Ega.

Best Time to Visit

We visited the lake by the end of July, with sun and some clouds, and the views were… really pretty. They say the lake is stunning year-round, but the experience varies by season:

  • Spring and Summer: Snowmelt feeds the lake, creating vibrant reflections of the Latemar mountains. Hikes and photography are at their best.
  • Autumn: The surrounding larch trees turn golden, creating a dramatic contrast with the turquoise water. Great time for photographers.
  • Winter: Unique photographic opportunities with ice and snow. But get a jacket!

📷 Photo tip: Visit early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds and capture the lake’s best colors in soft lighting.

Hiking Around Lago di Carezza

Even though the lake itself is small, there are several hiking options nearby:

  • Circular Path: An easy trail circles the lake in about 20–30 minutes, ideal for families or casual walkers.
  • Latemar Mountain Hikes: For more adventurous hikers, the Latemar group offers trails with panoramic views of the Dolomites.
  • Great Dolomites Road Walks: You can explore sections of this historic scenic route, combining the lake visit with wider Dolomite landscapes.

We did the visit to the lake with a relatively close walk to Rifugio Fuciade.

The Legend of Lago di Carezza

Lago di Carezza is also steeped in legend. According to local folklore, a wizard fell in love with a water nymph who lived in the lake. To impress her, he painted a rainbow across the water… When she vanished, the wizard smashed the rainbow into the lake, creating its shimmering colors. This story is why Lago di Carezza is often called the Rainbow Lake.

Practical Tips for Visiting

  • Swimming: Not allowed, as the lake is a protected area.
  • Facilities: There are parking areas, souvenir shops, and small cafés near the lake.
  • Photography: Best light is during sunrise or late afternoon. Avoid mid-day crowds if possible.
  • Nearby Attractions: Consider visiting Val d’Ega. I found this blog, (in Italian) that has short hikes around the area. If we go there again, I’ll check them for sure to experience hiking without the crowds.

Final Thoughts

Whether you are a hiker, photographer, or simply a lover of nature, Lago di Carezza in the Dolomites is a must-see destination. Its emerald waters, mountain backdrop, and enchanting legends make it one of northern Italy’s most memorable spots. It was a remarcable spot for us in our trip in the Dolomites and we recommend visiting it, over the overpacked Lago di Braies.

This is all from us, have a good day!!
