Selva de Oza | Autumn in the Pyrenees

If there is one place in the Spanish Pyrenees that truly comes alive in fall, it is Selva de Oza. Located in the western Pyrenees, in the province of Huesca, this wonderful forest transforms into a sea of colours every autumn. For us, Selva de Oza is not the best destination to do hikes, but we recommend going there if you’re looking for a forest with epic colours, calms vibes, and if you want have a slow walk in a destination that feels both wild and peaceful at the same time.

Autumn in Selva de Oza is not just about the colours (although we went primarily there for that). It’s about fresh air, quieter trails, and that special light that filters through beech forests in late October. If you’re planning a fall getaway in the Pyrenees, this corner of Aragón deserves a top spot on your list.

Where is Selva de Oza?

This forest is located in the beautiful Ansó Valley, in the western part of the Spanish Pyrenees and close to the French border. It sits in the natural park of Valles Occidentales (the light blue in the map), one of the lesser-known but most authentic mountain areas in northern Spain. It’s actually, the last valley I visited in all of the Huesca region.

Unlike more famous Pyrenean destinations such as Ordesa, Selva de Oza feels quieter and more untouched. The landscape here is defined by dense beech and fir forests, limestone peaks, open meadows, and rivers. In autumn, the beech trees dominate the scenery, turning the valley into a warm-toned mix. In fact, we expected to find many orange colours, but the palette was huge with reds and greens included.

The closest village is Ansó, a charming mountain town in Aragón. Staying here gives you easy access to Selva de Oza.

Visit Selva de Oza in Autumn

In summer, Selva de Oza is green and vibrant. But in autumn, usually from mid-October to early November, the forest explodes into color. The beech trees (hayedos) turn bright yellow and orange, while the higher slopes begin to show dustings of early snow. The contrast between golden forests and grey limestone peaks is stunning.

Here’s why we think this region in autumn is so special:

  • 🍂 Intense fall colors
  • 🥾 Simple hiking options
  • 📸 Great photography opportunities
  • 🌲 Fewer crowds compared to peak summer months
  • 🍁 A peaceful and calm atmosphere

If you love autumn landscapes, Selva de Oza delivers in many aspects, and it’s a good option for a family hike while taking photos.

Best Hiking Routes in Selva de Oza

Selva de Oza is a fantastic base for hiking, with routes ranging from gentle forest walks to demanding mountain ascents. Below are some of the best options to experience this forest in autumn, including the one we did.

1. Forest Walks in Selva de Oza

The area doesn’t have a classic or typical hike to do. It’s more about walking in or around it and relaxing while enjoying the colours. We found and did this loop hike of less than 5 km, that we enjoyed with baby Lara.

There are shorter and longer trails in the area that you can check. I always recommend either Wikiloc or AllTrails. Overall the hikes are easy and family-friendly. They are great options for a relaxed walk while taking photos.

You’ll find ground covered in fallen leaves, and sunlight filtering through the golden canopy. Maybe you see even cows running down with a shepherd or grazing. It’s one of those places where you just want to walk slowly and take everything in.

2. Boca del Infierno Trail

One of the most iconic features in Selva de Oza is the Boca del Infierno (Hell’s Mouth) gorge, a narrow gorge carved by the river, surrounded by rock walls and forest. In autumn, the golden trees above the dark canyon create an interesting contrast. This route combines forest scenery with impressive rock formations. This website has a post on it.

3. Aguas Tuertas and Ibón de Estanés

For those looking for a longer and more adventurous hike from Selva de Oza, heading towards Aguas Tuertas is a classic option. The landscape here opens into wide meadows with a meandering river that looks almost unreal from above. We did this longer hike on a separate day and have a complete dedicated post to it.

You can also extend this hike towards Ibón de Estanés, a beautiful mountain lake near the French border. In autumn, the combination of golden grasslands and early snow on the peaks creates a dramatic alpine atmosphere.

This hike is more demanding but incredibly rewarding if you’re prepared. We highly recommend doing this one, even with kids.

Doing Selva de Oza with Kids

One of the great things about Selva de Oza is that it’s suitable for families. You don’t need to commit to long mountain hikes to enjoy the area. Some advice for families would be:

  • Stick to the forest trails near the main parking area, like the one we did.
  • Bring layers, since autumn mountain weather can change quickly.
  • Keep distances flexible and focus on exploration, more than destination.

Kids often love playing in the fallen leaves and walking along the riverbanks. Selva de Oza offers a unique place for kids to play and explore.

Final Thoughts on Selva de Oza

Selva de Oza is one of the best places to experience autumn in the Spanish Pyrenees. With its dense beech forests, golden landscapes, and simple hiking routes, it offers something for everyone. We would recommend coming here if you’re planning a fall escape and want a destination that combines precious colors, peaceful trails, and authentic forest atmosphere.

If you want more intense hiking go for Aguas Tuertas and Ibón de Estanés. But make sure if you come to this valley of the Pyrenees, to visit this unique forest, especially when the leaves start to glow in shades of gold in Autumn 🍂
